a copy of Barbara Kerley’s The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins. Our One Book format is a
little bit different this year. The committee selected a picture book, but don’t let that fool you!
This book tells the story of how the first life-size dinosaur models came to be through the story
of the life of the artist, Waterhouse Hawkins. This book is a wonderful story full of rich history,
science, art, and a message of perseverance, which is beautifully written and enhanced by
masterful illustrations.
learning experiences that include all of the content areas and the specials. Parents are invited to
participate in this program by reading the book together as a family. Reading aloud is one of the
most important activities that parents can do with their children; it develops many important
literacy skills, expands vocabulary, and provides a model of fluent, expressive reading. Our goal
with the One Book, One Community program is to promote the benefits and joy of reading
through a community experience. This is a book worth reading again and again, for each time
you will gain a deeper understanding of the story and the details in the elaborate illustrations.
As in the past, Cora J. Belden Library also has additional materials at the library to support the One Book, One Community event. Today, the library will also be hosting Cool-ology ‘Dinosaurs and Fossils Rock!’ at 1:30 pm for children ages 3-6 years of age with an adult to support the One Book, One Community event. Please register for this engaging program offering six different stations for hands on learning by calling the Children’s Department at 860-258-2538, or by visiting www.rockyhillct.gov/library. Please also feel free to stop in to the library for more information or to add your child’s name to the list.
We hope everyone will join in on the fun of this One Book, One Community experience at home! Please look for the book and activity packet sent home today, or access the packet links above.
