The One and Only Ivan - Week One: Pages 1-74
- The first chapter is two sentences long:
I am Ivan. I am a gorilla.
It’s not as easy as it looks.
What did you think after you read this first chapter? Were you surprised it was so short? Did it make you want to read more? Why do you think the author started this way and then continues with short chapters?
- What do you think Ivan means when he says, “Humans waste words. They toss them like banana peels and leave them to rot.” (p. 2)
- What are the characteristics of Stella and Bob that make Ivan call them his best friends? What is important to you in a good friend?
- There is a special bond between Julia and Ivan. Why is she different from all the other children that come to visit Ivan? (pp.16-17)
- Why is Ivan’s art important to Mack? Why is it important to Julia?
- What is the importance of the story that Stella tells about Jambo, and what does it tell us about gorillas? (pp. 63-66)
- Do you think Stella is unhappy that Ruby has come to the arcade? Does she also seem happy about it and why? What is Ivan’s reaction, do you think he is jealous? (p. 69)
